ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Dr. Connie Jones is a board certified, fellowship trained, dedicated Breast Imaging Radiologist specializing in all aspects of breast imaging and intervention. A physician with over 25 years of experience, her clinical practice since residency has concentrated almost exclusively on Breast Imaging and Intervention, which involves the screening evaluation, diagnostic assessment, and diagnosis of breast diseases including breast cancer.  Dr. Jones’ clinical approach couples the clinical proficiency in assessing symptoms and physical findings with skilled interpretation of imaging studies.  Thus, her vast experience and knowledge of the clinical assessment of symptoms, clinical breast examination, extensive patient interactions, image interpretation skills and close collaboration with other physicians has resulted in her being a highly respected physician in her field.

Dr. Jones received her undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Wake Forest University.  She then completed her medical school training and received her Doctor of Medicine (M.D) degree from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1991. She then completed her residency training in Diagnostic Radiology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas.  This was followed by an intense year-long fellowship in Clinical Breast Imaging that provided specialized training in Mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI and image guided biopsy as well as the development of clinical skills such as formulating image-based treatment plans and recommendations for breast cancer patients.  Dr. Jones was credentialed by the American Board of Radiology in 1998 and continues her maintenance of certification in Diagnostic Radiology. Additionally, her prior training as a Psychiatry resident at Duke University gives her a unique perspective in dealing with and assessing patients’ emotional concerns as they are being evaluated for a possible breast cancer diagnosis.

Dr. Jones also has a wealth of experience in the clinical delivery and practice management of Breast Imaging Programs.  She has served as the Medical and Imaging Director of hospital, private practice and mobile breast imaging programs.  Her practice experience has given her the opportunity to provide services to a large variety and diversity of patient populations including but not limited to exclusive metropolitan populations, under-served regions and rural populations.  Dr. Jones has participated in research projects including a beta research clinical trial about the effectiveness of Tomosynthesis (3D-mammography). She has also served in a variety of leadership positions within hospital and community based breast centers and notably has served on numerous multidisciplinary boards and committees to build and structure breast programs to deliver optimal quality services and improve patient outcomes.  Her close collaboration with the imaging  technologists (mammography, ultrasound, MRI) and clerical staff at her facilities, the referring physicians, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, breast surgeons, plastic surgeons, as well as nurse navigators and geneticists has greatly expanded her knowledge base and understanding of the entirety of the patient journey.

Dr. Jones is uniquely qualified as an expert in the subject matter presented in The Breast Test Book and this website because she has interpreted literally tens of thousands of breast imaging studies and interacted personally with thousands of patients.  Unlike an academician whose perceptions and patient interactions are frequently filtered through medical students and residents or based on research interests, the strength of her opinions is a direct result of her daily involvement with patients and referring physicians in the community sector, the situation in which the majority of Breast Imaging is performed in this country.

Dr. Jones has been an unapologetic, ardent leader in breast health program development serving as coordinator and faculty for numerous continuing medical education (CME) seminars for physicians and technologists.  She is an experienced public speaker and has appeared for television and community events promoting mammography screening and early detection for breast cancer.  Other media involvement includes newspaper advertisements and a patient newsletter focusing on issues related to healthcare promotion.

She is a strong supporter of patient advocacy and education and has given numerous talks to community and women’s groups.

Her current efforts to educate the lay public is a continuation of her life’s work.
